Podcasting 101: Claim Your Social Media, Choose Your Style, and Maximize Your Studio Time

You've secured your domain name and locked down your IP. Now it's time for the next steps: claiming your social media handles, deciding what kind of show you're going to run, and making the most of every minute you spend in the studio.

Step 2: Claim Your Social Media Handles β€” Everywhere

Once you've settled on your podcast name, go grab your handle on every platform. Even the ones you don't plan to use right away. Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Pinterest, Snapchat, YouTube β€” all of it. This is still about protecting your IP. If you don't claim it, someone else can.

The good news: social media handles don't have to be spelled exactly the same as your domain. You have more flexibility here. If your exact name is taken, you can add a dash, an underscore, or a slight variation β€” just don't drift too far from your core name. You want people to be able to find you easily across platforms.

Take Club Shay Shay as an example. Shannon Sharp uses a consistent handle across YouTube and Instagram so his audience can find him no matter where they're searching. That consistency builds brand recognition fast. Aim for the same.

Step 3: Decide Your Show Format β€” Solo, Interview, or Both

Here's the thing: it really doesn't matter which format you choose. What matters is that you choose one and start. Both solo episodes and interview-style shows work. It comes down to your preference as a host.

  • Solo episodes are great if you're not ready to coordinate guests, or if you have a lot to say on your own (and if you've got the gift of yap, you know who you are).
  • Interview episodes are great for bringing in other perspectives, building relationships, and growing your network through your guests' audiences.
  • Both is also a completely valid answer β€” mix it up and see what resonates.

And don't stress about episode length. 30 minutes, 45, an hour, two hours β€” use it as a guideline, not a rule. Especially when you're starting out. Your first 25, 50, 100 episodes? You're learning. Make the mistakes. It's absolutely okay.

How to Maximize Your Studio Time

When you're renting studio time β€” like here at Perspective Studio Productions β€” you want to make every minute count. Here's how to think about it:

Arrive Early

Check with the studio ahead of time about how early you should arrive. There's always a sound check, mic placement, and setup to sort out before you hit record. Coming in early means you're not burning your paid session time on logistics.

Plan What You're Recording Before You Walk In

In an hour, you could:

  • Record two solo episodes (two 30-minute segments)
  • Record one full interview episode
  • Record a mix of content β€” an episode plus a promo video
  • Use the whole hour to get comfortable on camera and behind the mic for the first time

Know your plan going in. You don't have to stick to it rigidly, but having a structure means you leave with something usable every time.

Record a Promo Video for Your Launch

This one is underrated. If you're launching a new podcast, use part of your first studio session to record a short promo video β€” 1 to 2 minutes of you talking directly to your future audience. Tell them who you are, what the show is about, and why they need to tune in. Come with energy. Come with hype.

One of our clients did something brilliant: she uploaded her promo video to her distribution platform before her first episode dropped. People started following before she even launched. By the time episode one went live, she already had an audience waiting. That's how you build momentum before you even begin.

And if you have a product or service to promote, that first studio session is also a great time to record a commercial. Professional background, great lighting, broadcast-quality audio β€” use it for more than just your podcast.
